Stock HD and most others except the "hydraulic/solid" type, require a preload of .125

The problem is that there are many pushrod thread pitches out there:

Jims Pro-Lite=24 threads per inch; Slim Jims= 32; Andrews= 28 or 32; Crane= 28; New Time Savers 24; Old Time Savers also; HD= 32; S&S= 32; Screaming Beagle= 32; Rivera Taper Lite= 40; Rev Tech= 36

So here it is:

For 24 TPI turn 18 flats; 28 TPI turn 21 flats; 32 TPI turn 24 flats; 36 TPI turn 27 flats; 40 TPI turn 30 flats; 52 TPI turn 39 flats

Loosen the PRs and let them sit for 15 minutes, spark plugs out, rear wheel off the ground and PR tubes held up. I do them one at a time. You can do them two at a time, but this method is easier and less prone to mistakes.

As I turn the rear wheel over, I watch the loosened pushrods go up and down with the lifters. The majority of the time they will be down.

Starting with the front exhaust: find, roughly the center of the point where the pushrod is at the bottom. Take the slack out of the PR tube, but be careful, you can finger tighten too much and depress the spring. So, just take the slack out.

Then adjust the PR to the correct number of flats.

Wait 15 minutes before turning the motor. Do the same with the remaining PRs. 1
